This chapter deals with the authority of the person who exerts al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil and is most closely associated with it. This essay is based on a reading of some of the important works by al-Madkhali and other, like-minded 'ulama' in Arabic and (in translation) in English, Dutch and German, as well as the debates held on the internet. As al-Madkhali's authority is based on support from the older, more prestigious generation, the main line of attack against him is to question his qualifications. The second line of attack is not to question the remark of al-Albani that al-Madkhali is the hamil rayat al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil of the age but to question its weight. The third line of attack is to question the method of al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil itself as the Madkhalis have practiced it. Especially interesting is how the science of Madkhalism is politicised in the present Saudi context. Keywords:al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil; al-Madkhali; Saudi; ulama
