The study of the Ptolemaic coins in Alexandria was undertaken to observe the ancient monetary production from the metal supply through to the minting of coins. Firstly, following a short presentation on the origin of the elements required for the preparation of bronzes, the metallic composition analyses convey the deduction and documentation on the evolution of the monetary alloy. Furthermore, the inspection of the metallic compositions enabled the classification of several coin issues. Secondly, the insufficient availability of ancient sources necessitated the scrutiny of the coins to collect information on the engraver and the die production method. The engravings of the obverse and reverse types were used to provide detailed examinations of the iconography selected by the authorities. Finally, the various functions of the workshop from the initial melting of coin blanks, the adding of finishing touches to the final striking of coins were considered. These functions helped to ascertain the development of the Ptolemaic bronze coinage from its early roots in the old Macedonian traditions and further served to highlight its ability and originality to adapt and modernize itself. However, its originality cannot be viewed as indicating it to be an exception but rather as an attribution to the Hellenistic world’s evolution.
