The chapter reviews the influential Management and Work Behaviour (MWB) research of the past sixty years (a review of twenty-one studies, beginning with Carlson’s Executive Behaviour, 1951, and ending with Matthaei’s The Nature of Executive Work, 2010). These studies, which were made in various countries and settings, are examined in terms of their scope, context, theoretical framing, methods, and important results. Based upon these studies, the authors draw general conclusions about behavioural patterns in managerial work practices that are applicable to all managerial levels, time periods, business cultures, and organizational contexts. The argument is made that MWB research has made significant theoretical contributions to the study of management, including contingency theory, emergent strategy/processual management perspectives, and the notion of general management.
