The paper provides an analysis of the lexical field of BREAD as presented in the 12th-century Middle English homily collection Ormulum, written by the Augustinian canon Orm. The terms for different types of bread are analysed, partly as they are used by Orm in renderings of Latin forms in his source texts, partly against the background of the narrative and descriptive context in which they occur, in order to achieve a fuller understanding of their senses. For a few forms, evidence of earlier occurrences than what is recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary and the Middle English Dictionary is presented. Finally, the semantic relationships within the lexical field of BREAD are established.
