This chapter aims to offer an overview of key themes across recent works by urban ethnographers within the United States and beyond its borders. It highlights some of the major developments and new directions that have characterised urban ethnography during the past 20 years, roughly since the beginning of the new millennium. The chapter discusses six subject matters that have dominated American and international urban ethnographic research during the past 15–20 years, including inequality and exclusion in the inner city, urban migration and immigrant communities, gentrification and middle classes in the city, suburbs and small towns, public space, and urban culture. It aims to newly emerging trends in urban ethnography that will continue to grow in significance in the near future, alongside longer-standing interests. The chapter also aims to pay particular attention to new themes, new places, and innovations in fieldwork methods.
