The PhD-thesis analyses the phenomenon of the inettitudine in selected Italian novels of the early 20th century with respect to narrative, cultural and psychological theories. Referring initially to the social and psychological development of particular motives concerning the protagonists failure the concept of inettitudine is proved to be a convergent phenomenon among the literary movements of (anti-)heroism, dilettantism and intellectualism. The inetto is characterized as a hybrid personality whose distinctive features consist of a combination between the dilettante, the disgraziato, the intelletuale and the genio. The basic autobiographical structure of the novels reveals the protagonists course of life being dependent on contingent coincidences; furtheron there are elements of other literary genres to be mentioned which have an influence on the romanzo dell inettitudine. Its socio-critical significance and literary influence is finally based on the caricature of the intellectual and on the ambiguity of traditional values.
