This chapter provides a perspective on community-based research in linguistics, examining the range of variation in this work. I seek to broaden the definition of community-based research so as to better accommodate the different kinds of situations that arise over both time and space, taking as the foundation that community-based research is an orientation towards research, not a methodology (Ferreira and Gendron 2011).
