Abstract Origen was a prolific commentator on the Old Testament from the beginning of his career in Alexandria until his later days in Caesarea. While his hermeneutics echo terms of Alexandrian scholarship and have often been interpreted in this context, Jewish interpreters were crucial discussion partners who must not be overlooked. Philo of Alexandria provided important hermeneutic tools by mediating Homeric methods and Bible exegesis. In Caesarea rabbinic scholars, who were also familiar with Hellenistic hermeneutics, often engaged in conversation and polemic with Origen, thus prompting continued scholarly and religious exchange.
