This chapters deal extensively with empathic capacity, the capacity to experience shame or guilt and shame and guilt proneness. In order to diagnose these capacities or proneness, an assortment of theories has been described and tips have been provided for recognising them, bringing them up for discussion and describing them. Some of the contents may only be accessible to those who are familiar with a particular test. Specialist terminology will be used to describe how Rorschach, the MMPI-A (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory for Adolescents) and the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) can be used to diagnose empathic capacity and the capacity to experience shame or guilt. Instruments have also been devised to measure moral development. Last, several empathy scales have been developed in the area of experimental psychology, but to my knowledge these have not gained acceptance in Dutch forensic clinical practice and will therefore not be discussed.
