This case study report discusses issues of sustainability in music and dance in Bali. Sustainability refers to at least three broad areas. These are maintenance of repertoires and their performance practices; continuity of collective memory of music and dance; and the ecology of the music industry, especially in relation to provision of instruments and other artifacts of the performing arts. This topic covers many different types of music and ensembles; positions on the aesthetics of music and dance; religion; philosophical interpretations of music and dance; a complex music theory system; intricate sociocultural practices and beliefs; and aspects of cultural maintenance, revival, and documentation. It also covers the influence of tourism; manufacture of instruments, dance costumes, and performance paraphernalia; the contributions of non-Balinese scholars and researchers; a history of genre development, decline, and revival; the roles and significance of recording and media industries; political policy; and a well-developed pedagogy for the teaching and learning of music and dance.
