This paper discusses the role of cognitive process in marital dysfunction and describes three major approaches to cognitive therapy with couples: 1) modification of unrealistic expectations; 2) correction of faulty attributions; and 3) use of self-instructional procedures to decrease destructive interaction. It is suggested that cognitive interventions are generally consistent with systems-oriented marital therapy and that maximal impact on marital dysfunction will be achieved through an integration of cognitive and behavioral approaches.
