The problems associated with neuromotor immaturity are not confined to the childhood years. A cluster of immature reflexes which persist into later life can predispose an individual to be more prone to stress. Postural reflexes develop with primitive reflexes persisting underneath. In order to understand how postural and vestibular problems can interfere with higher brain functions in relation to maths, this chapter examines some specific features of dyscalculia in detail. The reticular activating system controls the overall degree of cortical alertness and establishes the sleep/wake cycle. Vestibular disorders can also affect hearing and auditory processing. Because vision and hearing are implicated, perception — the cognitive interpretation of external sensory stimuli — can also be affected. Multiple factors converge in adolescents and adults with neuromotor immaturity to create elusive and diffuse symptomatology. During the initial phases of treatment, vestibular-proprioceptive function normalizes and oculomotor disturbances resolve.
