Abstract

Itisperhapsanindicationofhumangeography'sgrowingmaturity asasocialsciencethatafteritslongperiodofempiricaltranquility andreluctancetoengagemethodological,letalonephilosophical, issues,thesubjecthasattemptedoverthepastfifteenyearsto assimilatequantification,behavioralismand,morerecently, humanismandstructuralmarxism.Thiscondensationofintellectualhistory,whichinotherdisciplineswasspreadoveraperiod oftwoorthreetimesaslong,hascreatedaturbulencewhich,while exciting,canalsobeconfusing,astheintellectualhalf-lifeofnot onlytheoriesbutalsowholeparadigmsshrinksrapidly.Intrue NorthAmericanfashion,obsolescenceissettinginmoreandmore speedily;NorthAmericangeography,too,hasitsannualritualof spring_cleaninganditsEasterparadeofnewmodelseachApril, whenlastyear'smotifsareclearedfromtheintellectualwardrobe. Morereflectiveandsyntheticworkisclearlyneededtoevaluateand tracethecourseofdistinctiveresearchtraditions,toshowthe natureofcontinuityandinterrelationbetweenthem,andtoplace narrowdebatewithinitsbroadertheoreticalandhistoricalcontext.
