S.L. Rubinshtein (1889-1960) is known in modern science mainly as an outstanding psychologist and philosopher, a methodologist and a theoretician, whose scientific works represent an organic entity consisting of a philosophically grounded theory, empirical evidence, and pedagogical practice. He created an original philosophical-psychological conception of man, of his activity and mind, his freedom and creativity, his cognition and speech-a conception of an ideal, subjective and objective, human being. He propounded and systematically developed the activity approach in psychology1 and then generalized it on the basis of a philosophical principle of determinism that he developed: external causes operate through internal conditions (or, more succinctly, the external through the internal).
