After 100 years of disciplinary evolution, communication studies has matured into multidisciplinary scholarly inquiries, a diversified curriculum, and complex academic units. Academics in the United States have played a primary role in developing communication studies that began with a narrow but passionate belief in rhetoric and public speaking as essential to democratic society. This paradigm began to connect with media studies as a result of studies in propaganda, persuasion, leadership, and information theory coupled with systems theory. Communication studies advanced in step with the two world wars, the Cold War, the maturation of related disciplines, and other social events during the last half of the twentieth century. The current state of the field indicates that communication studies, by nature and choice, remains strategic. Communication studies guides strategic structures, fractures, functions, discourses, contexts, and meanings relevant to human activities in dyads, groups, organizations, communities, and societies.
