This chapter describes Malaysian English (MalE) against the backdrop of the historical context and the language planning policies of the country from pre to post-independence which have contributed to shaping the variety of English that is found in Malaysia today. It overviews how English came to be used in Malaysia, alongside the other languages of this multilingual country. The chapter also describes language policies to provide an understanding of the status and functions that English has in relation to other languages. It illustrates the details of English use in contemporary Malaysia with reference to three key domains of use, that is, English in government and law; English in Malaysia's school system; and English in higher education. The chapter then describes the phonological, grammatical, and lexical features of MalE as a variety of Asian English. It explores the linguistic features that have made MalE different from the native model.
