This chapter begins with a close examination of “professionalism” and illustrates how it can be exclusive when there is little agreement on the term. This exclusivity can affect queer people at different workplaces and screen out the possibility for openness toward sexual and gender diversity. Using research on gay male educators in Kosovo as a case study, the author highlights how these educators are positioned as outcasts in their workplaces due to the “unprofessional” nature of their homosexuality. The chapter then explains the concept of “heteroprofessionalism” and demonstrates how it engages professionalism as a tool of marginalization against queer workers. The chapter concludes with a recommendation for administrators to deconstruct heteronormativity and create an equitable and fair understanding about professionalism in the workplace.
