Political geographers use scale both for describing different patterns of territorial organization and for representing the diverse manner in which political processes unfold across space. Early work in political geography sought to map political spaces at a variety of spatial scales, ranging from the international and national to the regional and urban. It soon led to an interest in the systematic analysis of political processes operating at each scale. More recently, political geographers have examined the rescaling of the state as well as the rise of contentious politics around scales other than solely the national. Although there have been disagreements about the value of the concept of scale, political geographers nevertheless find scale useful for representing complex geographies of political, social, economic, and environmental change.
