This chapter examines the history of recording devices in science. Particular attention is dedicated to understanding how we have thought of recording devices and why. It traces methodological work from science studies (Bruno Latour, Michel Callon, and Hans-Jörg Rheinberger), cinema and media studies (Marshall McLuhan, Jean-Louis Baudry, and Friedrich Kittler), art history (Peter Galassi and Arthur Danto), critical theory (Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin), continental philosophy (Martin Heidegger, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, and Félix Guattari), and logical positivism (Bertrand Russell and Philipp Frank). It studies the impact of recording devices on environmentalism, the arts, history and historical records.
