While there is no single definition of “affect” in human geography, the term most commonly refers to a body's capacities to affect and to be affected. While indebted to a number of precursors, principally feminist work on emotions, research on affect has been associated with the emergence of nonrepresentational theories. Within what is now a heterogeneous body of work, there are now multiple ways of understanding how affects emerge from, and are part of, sociospatial processes.
