Abstract Empathy allows us to step outside the boundaries of our own awareness and imaginatively enter the world of another person. It makes possible meaningful human interaction, and it allows us to engage in tasks that require coordination and consensus. In intercultural situations, empathy is more complex and more difficult, but it is a key competency for effective intercultural communication. In intercultural empathy, understanding is not viewed as a product, but as an ongoing process occurring between communicators. It is created during interaction, emerging as we listen to one another respectfully and engage in a mutual process of exploring and learning together. Intercultural empathy requires shifting our focus away from our own outlooks and toward the experiences of the other, striving for a synthesis of perspectives that allows us to overcome the differences that otherwise separate us from one another.
