This second edition of the Routledge Handbook of World Englishes comes ten years after the publication of the first edition. These ten years have seen the further development of varieties of English and the growth in the roles of English worldwide, perhaps most notably in the extended use of English in those countries which were not colonies of English speaking empires, with the increasing use of English in China the prime example. The Handbook addresses these new developments in two main ways. First, the authors of chapters from the first edition have updated their chapters. Second, seven new chapters have been commissioned for the new edition. In addition to new chapters on the Englishes of Bangladesh, South Africa, Uganda and the Maldives, these include chapters on the exponential use of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in higher education throughout the world, translanguaging and multilingual creativity in the Sinophone world, the position of English in Europe after Brexit, and how English impacts on the local linguistic and cultural ecology. As with the first edition, this edition’s concluding chapter considers the possible futures of English.
