Abstract

I mean in this essay to try to place Gothic in a different light; under, we might say, a different shadow. It has become a truism to say that Gothic is transgressive. Against, or behind, the daylight images of the realist tradition, Gothic throws up a parodic, difficult array; things which might seem regular are revealed in their grandiose, shocking asymmetry; history passes through a series of distortions; perversions surface and are given concrete form.
