Primarily because of a tradition originating in justified epistemological scruples, psychologists in the United States have frequently focused either on behavior or on experience, on the organism or on the personality, and have been more likely to generalize than integrate their findings. In contrast, the Russian tradition has often used the concept of human activity, which lends itself more easily to an integrated view. Abul'khanova-Slavskaia makes a conscious and successful effort to advance and articulate that integration. This approach allows us to link to her studies several American works, some of which come from outside psychology, but promise cross-fertilization and further integration. My intent here, given the limitations of time and space, is to call attention to a few of these works, without attempting to elaborate on the possible connections.
