If, as Morton White has written, "historical explanation explains facts prevailing at one time by reference to facts prevailing at an earlier time," then this statement would seem to be doubly true for archeological explanation.1 Like history, archeology is dependent upon a particular data base and a particular theoretical conceptualization. The absence of either, data base or theoretical construct, results in the writing of a dictionary: words defined but resulting in a book with neither plot nor meaning.
