This chapter discusses the origin and development of ecclesiastical history in late antiquity and the ways the genre defined itself vis-à-vis related forms of writing. Introducing fragmentary material and texts in Greek, Latin, and Syriac into the discussion, it seeks to nuance current understandings of the genre. In particular, it proposes to understand church histories as affirmations of social identities defined by religious affiliation, rather than as a profoundly new genre of writing history.
