Abstract This article serves as a review on electoral institutions, specifically on how they shape the election outcomes, the dynamics of democratic politics, and the emergence of candidates. It addresses the need to consider how electoral institutions are gendered and sheds some light on the political advantages men have long received from electoral institutions designed by men. The article also identifies the ways women contribute to—and benefit from—the basic frameworks of electoral politics.
