Contestation over ownership of human remains, grave goods, sacred objects and other culturally significant items is a current issue in heritage and museum studies. Claims on these remains and objects, and calls for their return and/or reburial have led to often well-publicized campaigns for and against their return. Although internationally there is a larger context regarding how human remains are treated and calls for the finding of bodies and the return of human remains in other situations, the issue in relation to archaeology, heritage and museums has been particularly focused by increasing demands from indigenous peoples for the return of remains and materials removed during periods of coloniszation.
