Everyday problem solving refers to the ability to generate solutions to problems that take place in one's everyday experiences. Everyday problem solving is assessed using psychological measures that include well‐ and/or ill‐defined problems. Efficacy is operationalized in terms of the number of solutions that are offered by individuals, the match between a proposed solution and the ideal solution, and/or the extent to which the strategies that are implemented match the goals of the problem solver. Research on everyday problem solving characterizes the conditions under which problem‐solving performance declines with age as well as the conditions under which performance is maintained. Advancing age is associated with a decline in the number of solutions generated for everyday problems; however, when the context of the problem is ecologically relevant to older adults or evokes emotion, age differences are less common and older adults offer solutions that can be more effective at resolving the problem.
