The population of centenarians in Japan has been increasing at an exceptionally fast pace in the past several decades. Reflecting this trend, researchers have been looking into the following aspects with regard to centenarians: (1) populational changes, (2) health and psychology, (3) functional levels, (4) diet, and (5) genetics. Such studies represent a general effort to understand centenarians themselves. Although the population of centenarians is increasing across the globe, a small percentage of people would have been exposed to how centenarians see and cognize their everyday life. In this chapter, we would like to introduce what it is like to be over 100 years old in Japan. Toward this purpose, we will first show the populational changes of Japanese centenarians and the governmental policy on the celebration of becoming 100 years old. We will then introduce studies on Japanese centenarians’ physical and psychological well-being. Finally, we will share our studies on how younger Japanese imagine what is like to be a centenarian and consider the role of centenarians in Japan’s super-aged society.
