Noun incorporationrefers to morphosyntactic constructions in which a noun forms a close unit with the verb. The noun is smaller in size than an independent argument, and forms a closer unit with the verb than if the verb were combined with an argument in the usual way. This chapter investigates the interplay between the syntax and the semantics–pragmatics of noun incorporation. The chapter first surveys the morphosyntactic patterns characteristic of noun incorporation, and discusses some generative accounts of them. It then turns to the distinctive semantics of noun incorporation and theoretical accounts that have extended “semantic incorporation” to a range of other constructions.
