Agricultural economics as described in this article is a distinctively American development. It was rooted in a unique set of institutions which grew up in a particular historical environment. Emerging as a separate discipline shortly after 1900, agricultural economics was firmly established by 1922. From that year until the early 1960s, agricultural economists set the pace for the parent discipline in empirical research, the cumulative development of data systems, and the joint application of economic theory and mathematical statistics to forecasting and policy analysis. Since 1965 the technical competence of agricultural economists has continued to increase but econometric methods are also being used by many other groups, and in newer fields such as economic development and environmental and natural resource studies, the skills of agricultural and other economists may be largely interchangeable.
