Before getting to the matter at hand, I want to say how moving it is to read a set of papers that are committed so deeply to both democratic hopes and rational inquiry. Democratic commitments have not led the contributors to back off from the implications of their research, and commitments to rational inquiry have not provoked cynicism about political values. Putting aside the important lessons about deliberative democracy, there is much to be learned from this volume about the marriage of rational inquiry and moral-political conviction.
