Spatial inequalities are the geographical projection of social inequalities. Their analysis lends a visibility to certain aspects of social inequalities. Spatial inequality is a multiscalar phenomenon that occurs in bordered and territorialized topographical entities as well as in topological flows and networks. It is often considered a matter of distribution, although various approaches differ in interpreting distribution either as an arrangement, or a participative process, or a product of production determined by the relations of production. Spatial inequality is a highly political issue and the scientific tradition of investigating it has always been part of a political discourse. Related concepts have thus been embedded into their historical and geographical contexts and have reflected the specific interests of those who formulated them – from nineteenth‐century “moral statistics” approaches to geopolitical concepts during the Cold War to more recent Marxist, feminist, humanist, and ecological concepts.
