In previous chapters, I have drawn attention to numerous influences that can contribute to high abilities, but the emphasis has been on those causes that exert their effects through a person’s experiences. These causes include various kinds of learning, formal and informal, deliberate and incidental. Another group of influences on abilities has been given less attention. These have their origins in biological sources of individual variability. Such biological differences between people often stem from inherited characteristics, and are essentially innate, even though their effects may not be evident until well after a person’s birth.
