E‐commerce consists of a diverse set of business practices conducted through the Internet, including e‐tailing (electronic retailing), electronic data interchange, advertising, recruitment, banking, telephony, and distance learning. Its adoption has led to numerous changes in how firms conduct business. This entry first summarizes the major dimensions of e‐commerce, including retailing, gambling, education, and tourism. Second, it explores the geography of e‐commerce and the spatial implications of online consumption. Because it is embedded in local and national social contexts, there is no spatially invariant model of e‐commerce that unfolds in the same way everywhere.
