The opposition between “the public” and “the private” is often seen as exhausting the range of possibilities for managing social life. Increasingly the notion of the commons and the practice of commoning is providing a renovated lexicon based on already existing practices and possibilities to organize resources and perform collective management outside the duality of state/market. This essay offers a glossary of notions born out of recent projects to rediscover the commons as a political concept. The chapter develops a series of keywords grounded in both scholarly debates and recent social movements and experiments, mainly from southern Europe. The glossary includes key notions such as commons and enclosures; new related terms such as commoning and precarity, as well as concepts such as commonfare, CITYzenship, and the common of the commons, yet to be fully defined although already circulating among social movements’ imaginaries.
