This chapter lists important terminology used in topics of counseling that commence with the alphabet 'F'. It contains the explanation of several terms, including factitious disorder, factor analysis, and family life cycle. Factitious disorder refers to deliberately exaggerating, inducing, or feigning symptoms of physical or mental illness for the sole purpose of fulfilling the patient role. Factor analysis is a statistical procedure based on the work of Charles Spearman (1927), who noted that multiple correlations could be accounted for via a simple model of derived data. The concept of what constitutes a family life cycle has changed over the years, but what has remained constant is the notion that time is linear. This chapter is a part of the American Counseling Association Encyclopedia of Counseling, which beyond simply defining counseling concepts by making the material come alive through its writing style and format.
