This chapter reviews mobile therapy (mTherapy) delivered via phone apps, considered the next frontier in mental health care delivery. These apps can track mood, sleep, energy level, and various symptoms in real time, and they can provide appointment and medication reminders, self-motivating content, and soothing narratives. Their efficacy has been tested in the prevention and treatment of mild mental health problems, suicidal behavior, and various psychiatric conditions. Studies of apps or text messages that are used to track behavior and mood suggest that tracking apps may be beneficial. Mobile narratives used for relaxation or exposure therapy may reduce anxiety and aid in the delivery of traditional behavioral therapy. Although there now are inadequate data to support recommending wide use of such apps for treatment of psychiatric disorders, these innovative approaches are gaining in popularity and improving in quality. More research is clearly needed to establish the efficacy of mTherapy.
