Structural adjustment refers to the process of restructuring national economies using a standard package of policies that emphasizes the market as the main mechanism for the allocation of economic resources. Structural adjustment programs (SAPs) have been a key contributor to economic globalization from the 1980s onwards as they have been widely implemented in rich, transition, and poor countries alike. Feminist researchers showed that SAPs tend to have disproportionate adverse impacts on women, particularly among low‐income groups, as they increase women's unpaid workload and constrain the options for securing livelihoods. Feminist critiques of SAPs have contributed to the development of alternative macroeconomic policies for broadly shared development.
