An approach is proposed for the study of vase painters through appraisal of their choice of subjects compared with that of their contemporaries and predecessors. Exekias' interest in Trojan scenes is explored and in particular his innovations and apparent interest in scenes including Ajax and Achilles, together or alone. It is tentatively suggested that this reflects a positive attitude counter to the myth-propaganda of Peisistratan Athens, and that the novel scene of the heroes gaming might have served as a comment on an episode in Peisistratos' second return from exile.
