In this introduction to the Handbook of Interpersonal Psychology we present a history of modern interpersonal psychology that focuses on the theoretical roots that commonly underlie its major lines of science and practice (e.g., the work of Harry Stack Sullivan, George Herbert Meade, Kurt Lewin, Fritz Heider, and John Bowlby). We describe how the handbook evolved into its present form based on the input and feedback of experts in the field, and provide a summary of the contributions of chapter authors. We believe that the handbook provides a state-of-the-art overview of the field that will help shape the future of interpersonal psychology in the first half of the 21st century.
