This chapter identifies basic business strategies to create value and achieve a competitive advantage. While the level of analysis is the business unit, there can be variations by product categories, location and other dimensions that make activities specific for different market segments. Without a clear direction, it is difficult to define value and market segmentation. The chapter discusses the concept of value, it is important to define the key driver of the type of strategy pursued by companies: their direction. Generic strategies are a simple recipe that can be followed when deciding where to position a company with respect to market segments. The chapter addresses the concept of generic strategies in terms of configuration of activities and risks involved with the strategies. It is clear that the use of management science tools provides managers with rational approaches to implement generic strategies by supporting their design or providing strategic advice.
