The paper will initially discuss whether there is a need for developing a new general theory of lexicography. The clear-cut answer to this question is both yes and no. The premises for this apparently contradictory position will be explained, and a new vision of lexicography presented in which lexicography is viewed as a part of a broader consultation discipline integrated in the information science. The existing lexicographical works on electronic platforms as well as a number of other electronic consultations tools will then be classified in four main categories according to new criteria which take into account the technological differences between the printed and the electronic media, and on this basis the concepts of e-lexicography and lexicographical e-tool will be defined. The paper will then proceed to a discussion of the dialectical relation between the type and the individual in terms of needs and their satisfaction. Finally, the concept of individualization as well as some of the ways to approach it in lexicographical and other e-tools for consultation purposes will be discussed.
