Abstract

Abstract This chapter revisits key issues for the interpretation of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter since the publication of Nicholas Richardson's commentary on the poem in 1974. Issues examined include the Hymn's language and style in relation to other early hexameter poetry, its relationship to the cults of Demeter and Persephone in Eleusis, its structure and narrative, and gender conflict in the poem.
