The importance of validity in assessing second language knowledge, abilities, and performance is uncontroversial in second language acquisition and language testing. However, less agreement exists about exactly what validity means and how validation should be undertaken. This chapter provides an overview of validity and validation in language assessment over the past three decades by identifying common ground in the field. Key issues for second language researchers wishing to engage in validation research are defined by illustrating how concepts in argument-based validity intersect with existing validation studies in second language research. Suggestions are offered for researchers undertaking validation research for assessments used in second language research. The chapter concludes with suggestions on the need to engage with validation practices in the broader community of educational and psychological testing or create a more suitable frame of reference to promote better communication within the field.
