Despite psychology tracking its roots to the earliest days of mankind, a number of key concepts such as the mind, consciousness, unconscious, and free will are still hard to pin down and exactly define, which to some extent has held back progress in research. Psychology as an academic discipline dates back to the late nineteenth century with Sigmund Freud at its forefront. Freud suggested that the mind consisted of the conscious and the unconscious. Freud believed that the unconscious serves as a “dustbin” for repressed thoughts or feelings and that it is equipped with a number of defense mechanisms to restrain repressed thoughts and feelings from entering conscious awareness. Although today many of Freud's ideas are considered defunct, the existence of a conscious and unconscious mind is well recognized.
