This chapter considers the relationship between human resources and sustainable tourism. Two dimensions of this relationship are pointed out: (1) tourism can only exist if the industry can attract and retain an adequate supply of good quality staff, in other words, if there is a sustainable workforce; and (2) the way in which staff are treated by both managers and tourists given that sustainability is about social equality and justice. The chapter also notes that the human resource situation is particularly difficult where the market is dominated by major transnational corporations and in developing countries. In general, it also appears that the most serious problems are found in the hospitality and retail travel sectors. How to achieve more sustainable human resources management is explored. Global examples of good practice in human resource management are outlined.
