Unfortunately, psychologists have not analyzed Skinner’s philosophy of science and psychology extensively. Among radical behaviorists a detailed evaluation might seem unproductive because of our limited understanding of the antecedents of philosophical verbal behavior and because of epistemological skepticism about the possibility of analyzing adult verbal behavior completely. Nevertheless, Skinner’s behavior analysis rests on numerous assumptions which must be evaluated if radical behaviorism is to be assessed fairly and modified appropriately. The aims of this chapter are to outline Skinner’s philosophy of science and to criticize it in the hope of stimulating additional dialogue.
