Based on selected text excerpts, this paper aims to prove that significant functions of printing (the literary works of living authors) can be attributed to competition and interaction between the two media (manuscripts and printing) during the 15th and 16th centuries. While the status of litarary texts within the culture of manuscripts often appears diffuse, this period saw the development of a (consciously reflected) functional differentiation between, for example, the public vs. the private, standards of literary perfection vs. acceptance of incompletion, and completeness vs. temporariness.
